World Organization Against Torture Demands Israel Release Two Flotilla Activists

Brief: International NGO calls for release of two individuals detained after participating in maritime flotilla aimed at breaching Israel's naval blockade of Gaza.

The World Organization Against Torture (OMCT) has issued a demand for Israel to release two individuals detained following their participation in a maritime flotilla that attempted to breach Israel's legal naval blockade of Gaza. The organization identified the detained individuals as Thiago Ávila and Saif Abukeshek, claiming they were "abducted" from what they termed the "Global Summed Flotilla."

Israeli authorities have not yet issued a detailed public statement regarding the specific detentions, though the IDF routinely intercepts unauthorized vessels attempting to reach Gaza in violation of the security blockade. Israel maintains that all humanitarian aid to Gaza must pass through official inspection points to prevent the smuggling of weapons and dual-use materials to Hamas and other terrorist organizations operating in the territory.

The OMCT's use of the term "abducted" represents a characteristically hostile framing by an international NGO. Israeli security forces operate under legal authority when intercepting vessels attempting to breach the blockade, which has been recognized as legal under international law by multiple international bodies, including a UN panel in 2011.

Maritime flotillas to Gaza have historically served as propaganda operations designed to challenge Israel's security measures. The most notorious incident occurred in 2010 when Turkish activists aboard the Mavi Marmara violently attacked IDF naval commandos during a boarding operation, resulting in casualties on both sides and a severe diplomatic crisis with Turkey.

Israeli officials have consistently maintained that Gaza's Hamas leadership deliberately rejects the use of existing legitimate channels for humanitarian aid, preferring instead to orchestrate international incidents that cast Israel as blocking assistance. Egypt and Israel both maintain border controls with Gaza due to security concerns related to Hamas, which is designated as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States, the European Union, and other nations.

The identities and nationalities of Ávila and Abukeshek were not immediately confirmed by Israeli authorities. Participants in previous flotilla attempts have come from various countries and have included pro-Palestinian activists and individuals affiliated with organizations sympathetic to Hamas.
