Israel to Honor Yoni Netanyahu at National Aviation Heritage Center

Israel will establish a commemoration for Lt. Col. Yonatan "Yoni" Netanyahu at a national aviation heritage center, officials announced, honoring the legacy of one of the country's most celebrated military heroes.

The tribute will recognize Netanyahu's pivotal role in Israel Defense Forces operations and his ultimate sacrifice during Operation Entebbe in 1976. The aviation heritage center, which celebrates Israel's military and civilian aviation history, was selected as an appropriate venue given Netanyahu's service as a distinguished officer in the elite Sayeret Matkal commando unit.

Yoni Netanyahu, the older brother of former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, commanded the rescue operation at Uganda's Entebbe Airport on July 4, 1976, where Israeli forces freed 102 hostages held by terrorists who had hijacked an Air France flight. The daring mission, which involved flying more than 2,500 miles to East Africa, is widely regarded as one of the most successful counter-terrorism operations in history.

Netanyahu was the only Israeli soldier killed during the operation when he was struck by gunfire while leading his troops. He was 30 years old at the time of his death. His leadership and sacrifice have made him an enduring symbol of Israeli military valor.

Details about the specific nature of the commemoration, including whether it will include exhibits, educational materials, or memorial installations, have not yet been released. The aviation heritage center regularly hosts displays honoring significant figures and milestones in Israeli aviation and military history.

The Netanyahu family immigrated to Israel from the United States, and Yoni served with distinction in multiple conflicts, including the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War, earning numerous citations for bravery. Operation Entebbe, later renamed Operation Yonatan in his honor, remains a defining moment in Israeli military history and a testament to the country's commitment to protecting its citizens worldwide.
