Israel and Lebanon to Hold Border Demarcation Talks in Washington Next Week

Brief: U.S. will mediate renewed negotiations between Israel and Lebanon on maritime and land border issues amid regional tensions.

Israel and Lebanon are set to hold a new round of negotiations in Washington on May 14-15, the United States announced, as both countries seek to address outstanding border demarcation issues under American mediation.

The talks, which will take place at the State Department, represent a continuation of U.S.-brokered efforts to resolve maritime and land boundary disputes between the two countries. While Israel and Lebanon remain technically in a state of war, indirect negotiations mediated by the United States have yielded limited progress in recent years, most notably the 2022 maritime border agreement that delineated offshore gas fields.

The upcoming discussions come at a sensitive time for regional stability, with Hezbollah maintaining its dominant presence in southern Lebanon and periodic tensions along Israel's northern border. Israeli security officials have repeatedly warned that Hezbollah's military infrastructure poses a strategic threat to Israeli civilians and national security.

For Israel, clarifying border demarcations serves both security and economic interests. Clear boundaries reduce the potential for miscalculation and conflict while enabling the development of natural resources in disputed areas. The 2022 maritime agreement, which established boundaries for the Karish and Qana gas fields, demonstrated that pragmatic arrangements are possible even between hostile parties when U.S. mediation is robust.

The State Department has not released details about the specific agenda for the May talks, though border demarcation issues typically involve technical surveys, territorial claims, and security arrangements. Israeli officials are expected to insist on arrangements that protect Israeli sovereignty and security interests while maintaining freedom of action against terrorist threats.

Lebanon's participation in the talks reflects its urgent need for economic development, particularly access to offshore energy resources. However, Hezbollah's influence over Lebanese government decisions remains a complicating factor in any negotiations involving Israel.
