IDF Soldier Filmed Desecrating Virgin Mary Statue in Lebanese Village

The Israel Defense Forces has launched an investigation after video footage emerged showing an Israeli soldier placing a cigarette in the mouth of a Virgin Mary statue at a church in southern Lebanon.

The incident, which occurred during IDF operations in a Lebanese village, was captured on video and circulated on social media, drawing widespread condemnation from religious leaders and human rights organizations. The footage shows a uniformed soldier approaching the statue and inserting a cigarette between its lips while other soldiers are visible in the background.

The IDF released a statement condemning the soldier's actions as "inappropriate behavior that does not reflect the values of the Israel Defense Forces." Military officials indicated that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against the soldier involved, though his identity has not been publicly disclosed.

Christian leaders in Lebanon and across the Middle East have expressed outrage over the incident. The desecration of religious symbols is considered a serious offense under international humanitarian law, which mandates respect for cultural and religious property during military operations.

Israeli religious affairs officials also condemned the act, emphasizing that respect for all faiths is a cornerstone of Israeli military ethics. "Such behavior is unacceptable and goes against the core values that IDF soldiers are expected to uphold," a military spokesperson stated.

Human rights organizations called for accountability and urged Israeli authorities to ensure that those responsible face appropriate consequences. The incident has further strained already tense relations between Israel and Lebanon, adding to diplomatic complications in the region.

The IDF's Military Advocate General's office is reportedly reviewing the case to determine whether criminal charges should be filed in addition to administrative disciplinary measures. Military officials emphasized their commitment to maintaining professional conduct standards among troops operating in sensitive areas.

This incident comes amid ongoing IDF operations in southern Lebanon, where Israeli forces have maintained a presence in border areas. The military has long emphasized its commitment to respecting religious sites and civilian property during operations, making this violation particularly noteworthy for Israeli military leadership.
