IDF Destroys 30-Meter Hezbollah Attack Tunnel in Southern Lebanon

Brief: Israeli forces eliminated a major cross-border terror tunnel as operations continue to dismantle Hezbollah's offensive infrastructure.

The Israel Defense Forces announced the destruction of a 30-meter Hezbollah tunnel in southern Lebanon, marking the latest success in ongoing operations to neutralize the Iranian-backed terror organization's offensive infrastructure along Israel's northern border.

IDF engineering units identified and demolished the tunnel, which was designed to facilitate cross-border attacks against Israeli civilian communities and military positions. The tunnel's substantial length underscores the scale of Hezbollah's investment in underground warfare capabilities over the past two decades.

The discovery and elimination of the tunnel represents a significant tactical achievement in Israel's broader campaign to degrade Hezbollah's ability to threaten Israeli sovereignty and civilian safety. Underground tunnels have been a cornerstone of Hezbollah's military strategy, allowing terrorists to move weapons, personnel, and launch surprise attacks while evading detection and airstrikes.

Israeli military officials have repeatedly emphasized that Hezbollah's tunnel network, built with Iranian financing and technical assistance, constitutes a direct violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Second Lebanon War. That resolution called for the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon and the establishment of a weapons-free zone between the Litani River and the Israeli border.

The IDF has invested heavily in tunnel detection technology and specialized combat engineering capabilities following lessons learned from confronting Hamas's extensive tunnel network in Gaza. These capabilities have proven essential in identifying and neutralizing similar threats on the Lebanese border.

Since the 2006 war, Hezbollah has dramatically expanded its military capabilities with Iranian support, amassing an estimated arsenal of over 150,000 rockets and missiles capable of striking anywhere in Israel. The terror organization's tunnel infrastructure represents another dimension of this military buildup, designed to enable ground incursions into Israeli territory during any future conflict.
