IDF Considers Resuming Gaza Operations After Hamas Rejects Disarmament Proposal

The Israel Defense Forces is evaluating options to renew military operations in Gaza following Hamas's rejection of a disarmament offer reportedly presented by international mediators, according to military sources.

The proposal, which came through what sources described as a "Board of Peace" initiative, called for Hamas to surrender its weapons as part of a broader framework to de-escalate tensions in the coastal enclave. Hamas officials have firmly rejected the terms, maintaining that disarmament is not negotiable under current conditions.

Israeli defense officials view the rejection as eliminating a potential diplomatic pathway and are now reassessing military options in Gaza. The IDF has maintained a state of readiness along the Gaza border, with forces positioned to respond to various scenarios should political leadership authorize renewed action.

The identity and composition of the "Board of Peace" that allegedly mediated the disarmament offer remains unclear, though regional peace initiatives have historically involved various combinations of United Nations representatives, Egyptian mediators, and other international actors.

Hamas has consistently maintained that it will not surrender its military capabilities, which it characterizes as necessary for resistance against Israeli occupation. The organization's armed wing has rebuilt substantial portions of its military infrastructure following previous conflicts, according to Israeli intelligence assessments.

The development comes amid ongoing tensions in the region, with sporadic violence along the Gaza border and periodic exchanges of fire. International observers have expressed concern that any resumption of large-scale military operations could trigger another major conflict with significant humanitarian consequences for Gaza's civilian population of approximately two million people.

The situation remains fluid, with Israeli officials indicating that final decisions on any military action would require cabinet approval and coordination with international partners. Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations continue to warn about deteriorating conditions in Gaza, where infrastructure damage from previous conflicts compounds ongoing economic hardship.

The Gaza Strip has been under Hamas control since 2007, when the organization seized power from the Palestinian Authority. Since then, Israel and Egypt have maintained varying degrees of restrictions on the territory's borders, citing security concerns.
