Marxist Publication Accuses Israel of ‘Gazafication’ of Lebanon

Brief: Far-left outlet In Defence of Marxism publishes inflammatory commentary comparing Israeli operations in Lebanon to Gaza campaign.

A far-left Marxist publication has published an inflammatory opinion piece accusing Israel of implementing what it terms the 'Gazafication' of Lebanon, reflecting ongoing international criticism of Israeli military operations against Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon.

The piece, published by In Defence of Marxism, appears to draw parallels between Israel's defensive operations in Gaza following the October 7th massacre and current security actions in Lebanon targeting Iranian-backed Hezbollah positions. The publication is known for its anti-Israel editorial stance and promotion of revolutionary socialist ideology.

Israel has conducted targeted operations in southern Lebanon aimed at degrading Hezbollah's military capabilities, which pose an ongoing threat to Israeli civilians in the north. These operations follow years of Hezbollah establishing military positions in civilian areas of southern Lebanon, in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

The IDF has emphasized that operations in Lebanon are conducted with precision to minimize civilian casualties while neutralizing terrorist infrastructure. Israeli officials have repeatedly stated that Hezbollah's entrenchment in Lebanese territory, backed by Iranian funding and direction, represents a strategic threat that Israel has both the right and obligation to address.

The use of inflammatory terminology by international publications to describe Israeli defensive operations has been criticized by Israeli officials as part of a broader effort to delegitimize Israel's right to self-defense. Such rhetoric often ignores the security threats facing Israeli communities and the Iranian proxy network operating across Israel's northern border.

Hezbollah has fired thousands of rockets at Israeli civilian areas over the past two decades and maintains an estimated arsenal of over 150,000 missiles aimed at Israeli population centers. The terrorist organization operates as an Iranian proxy and maintains de facto control over large portions of Lebanese territory, undermining Lebanese sovereignty while using civilian areas as shields for military operations.
